All Things Exhaust
Vehicle exhausts were originally designed to remove and divert harmful fumes, the byproduct of engine combustion, so they don’t enter the passenger cabin. In modern vehicles, the exhaust also serves as a means of limiting the amount of harmful emissions expelled into the environment. Multiple components make up this system. Our professional mechanics can help you with them. One major part of the exhaust is the catalytic converter. Using precious metals as chemical reaction catalysts, the catalytic converter “scrubs” the exhaust to make it less environmentally harmful. Specifically, it changes carbon monoxide into less harmful carbon dioxide and water vapor. This rarely needs replacing, but an internal clog that causes your engine to overheat or lose power can be a serious problem. A more common repair is the replacement of a failed oxygen sensor. It detects the amount of unburned oxygen in the exhaust. When this information is relayed to your car’s computer, adjustments are made to properly balance the fuel-air mixture. If the oxygen sensor goes bad, the misinformation can cause bad gas mileage and an illuminated check engine light. If you notice that your vehicle is making a lot more noise than it used to, have us check it for an exhaust leak. This is most commonly the result of the repeated heating and cooling the system endures, compromising the integrity of the gaskets. Finally, beware of rust. It poses the greatest risk to the integrity of your car’s muffler and exhaust pipe. However, road hazards and regular wear and tear can damage the exhaust pipe, too.
