What to Know
Your automobile’s braking system works using hydraulic force and friction. When you press the brake pedal, brake fluid is forced from the master cylinder through lines to the small cylinder at each wheel. The fluid force then moves the calipers, forcing the brake pads against the rotors. Friction between the two metal entities slows and stops your car. It’s a good idea to have us check your brakes periodically. However, there are some signs you may notice that should prompt you to schedule a visit instead of waiting for the next regularly scheduled appointment. The most obvious sign is squealing when you apply brakes. This usually indicates that the brake pads are near the end of their usable life. Although the metallic pads are durable, they eventually wear thin. Most manufacturers embed tabs in their products to make the alert sound when exposed during the wearing process. Another clue is a general increase in stopping distance. Also, if your vehicle pulls to one side when you apply brakes, you may have a situation where one side is stronger than the other. Likewise, a severe vibration during braking may point to a warped rotor. Rotors are the large metal discs on the inside of each wheel. When your brakes overheat, the rotors may warp, ruining their smooth surface and accounting for the vibration. Finally, a burning odor can point to many car troubles, including a brake problem. Potential culprits include a stuck brake caliper or an emergency brake that was accidentally left engaged.
